South Africa has made significant progress in science communication over the past decade, particularly through the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), universities, science centres, and organisations such as the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA).

South Africa is also home to roughly 10% of the world's known plant species and three global biodiversity hotspots, a natural asset base for bio-innovation. But biotechnology, from crop science to health research, only scales where regulators are trusted, markets are receptive, and communities understand what is being asked of them.
That is the loop to the right: research becomes public value only once it has been communicated, trusted, taken to market and reinvested in the next generation of scientists.
